Eczema Medications

If you suffer from eczema, your doctor may prescribe medication to treat your dry, itchy skin.  Some of these include:

Antibiotics

If your eczema has resulted in a bacterial infection, your doctor will prescribe antibiotics.  Take the full amount as prescribed, even if your skin is beginning to clear up.

Antihistamines

When your body is reacting negatively to an irritant, histamines and other chemicals are released that cause allergic reactions.  Your doctor may prescribe an antihistamine to counteract this reaction.

Oral Steroids

Oral steroids are often given in cases of severe eczema.

Steroid Creams

Steroids ease the uncomfortable symptoms of eczema by suppressing the body's response to the allergen or cause.  Your doctor will prescribe this cream, which is often only to be used for a few days at a time.  Too much use of this cream can cause your skin to thin, which will make it more susceptible to blemishes, wrinkles and visible blood vessels.
